Natural Remedies for Skin Pigmentation

Though the home remedies listed here can help reduce or eliminate pigmentation, always consult a doctor before using these if the pigmentation is the result of pregnancy – you never want to try any remedies while pregnant without first making sure they are safe for your baby.

1. Aloe Vera

The pure gel of aloe vera has been used for thousands of years to cure hundreds of ailments. Create a mask made of pure aloe vera, seaweed and raw honey. Mix it, allow it to settle for 10 minutes and thenapply to the pigmentation. Rinse it away with lukewarm water. This treatment for pigmentation will soften the skin and encourage old skin cells to slough away, leading to new skin growth.

2. Lemon and Potato Juice

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which helps to bleach the skin. Potatoes contain catecholase, which helps lighten the skin as well. Mixing both juices and applying them to the pigmentation can help treat the problem.

3. Lemon, Honey, Milk and Orange Peel

The fruit peels contain citric acid, and the honey and milk help bind the peels into a paste that soothes and softens your skin. Simply make a powder of dried orange peel, add some lemon juice and milk, and enough honey to create the proper consistency for a mask. Leave it on the spots for about 15 minutes, then wash away.

4. Fuller’s Earth, Papaya and Vitamin E

This homemade facial mask, applied twice a week, can help reduce the appearance of pigmentation. Mix one half cup of Fuller’s earth with 1 tablespoon of blended papaya. Then pop two Vitamin E capsules – more if you need a thinner consistency – and mix them into the earth and papaya. Leave the mixture on the face for several minutes.

5. Sandalwood Powder

Mix this powerful powder with something that has natural acids, such as tomato juice or cucumber juice. Apply as a mask on a daily basis to reduce the discoloration.

6. Honey and Almond

Blend a tablespoon of almond powder with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon. Make sure you use organic ingredients if at all possible. Apply the mask for your face for 15 minutes, when rinse it away with lukewarm water.

7. Cucumber and Mint

This delightfully cooling mask can help treat pigmentation. Mix six leaves of fresh mint with one raw egg white that has been beaten until frothy. Then crush half of a cucumber until it is a fine paste. Mix it with the mint and the egg, blend it well, then put the mask on your face for 15 minutes. Wash it away with lukewarm water.

8. The Right Diet

Remember, you really are what you eat, so make sure to eat the right foods to treat pigmentation. Anything that is rich in Vitamin E, such as fruits and veggies, can work wonders for reducing the pigmentation from the inside out.

The benefits of eating fish

WHY IS EATING FISH HEALTHY?

Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits. White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oily fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, or the "good" fats. Since the human body can’t make significant amounts of these essential nutrients, fish are an important part of the diet. Also, fish are low in the "bad" fats commonly found in red meat, called omega-6 fatty acids.

WHY ARE OMEGA-3S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

A growing body of evidence indicates that omega-3 fatty acids provide a number of health benefits. They:
  • help maintain cardiovascular health by playing a role in the regulation of blood clotting and vessel constriction;
  • are important for prenatal and postnatal neurological development;
  • may reduce tissue inflammation and alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis;
  • may play a beneficial role in cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), reducing depression and halting mental decline in older people.
The omega-3s found in fish (EPA and DHA) appear to provide the greatest health benefits. Fish that are high in omega-3s, low in environmental contaminants and eco-friendly include:
  • wild salmon from Alaska (fresh, frozen and canned),
  • Arctic char,
  • Atlantic mackerel,
  • sardines,
  • sablefish,
  • anchovies
  • farmed rainbow trout and
  • albacore tuna from the U.S. and Canada.

WHAT ABOUT FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS?

Besides eating fish, another way to consume omega-3 fatty acids is by taking store-bought supplements. Fish oils come from both fish caught as food for humans and from small fish caught for animal feed, such as Peruvian anchovies.
A word of caution: contaminants such as PCBs accumulate in fish oil just as they do in fish, so make sure to buy capsules that are made from purified fish oil 

WHAT ARE OTHER SOURCES OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?

Alternative sources of omega-3s come from terrestrial sources like flaxseed, walnuts and wheat germ. While still beneficial, these do not appear to provide as a great a health benefit as the omega-3s found in fish, shellfish and marine algae.

DO THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA-3S OUTWEIGH THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH CONTAMINANTS IN SEAFOOD?

Fish is generally a healthy food source and can be safely eaten in most cases. But depending on your age and health circumstances, some people should limit the amounts of fish they eat. Consider the following:
  • For young children and women of childbearing age, excessive consumption of mercury-contaminated fish can severely impact a child's development.
  • Older women and men may find it an acceptable tradeoff to exceed recommended seafood meal limits to increase their omega-3 intake.
  • People at high risk of cardiovascular disease must weigh the cancer risk of eating fish high in PCBs with the benefits of eating fish high in omega-3s, in which case the benefits of omega-3s may outweigh the cancer risk (1 in 100,000 - the level recommended by the EPA). However, these chemicals are known to cause serious health problems besides cancer, so the tradeoffs are not simple.
  • The good news is that there are several low-contaminant, high-omega-3 seafood options available (see list above), so there’s no need to risk eating contaminated fish.

The benefits of Natural food


Let’s first understand the concept of “wholefoods” versus “fragmented” or processed foods. Processed foods have been stripped of one or more of their original elements, i.e. they are missing valuable nutrients, fibres or water. Natural foods, or Wholefoods (fresh whole fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, seeds, nuts, beans and legumes) have been provided for us by nature, and by their very nature, are the perfect foods for our bodies to thrive and survive on. We are, after all, part of nature, and as such are designed to thrive on natural foods. Whilst we can certainly exist on processed foods, we cannot (I believe) survive on these foods alone.

Natural food, as nature intended

Man-made/factory-made/synthetic foods or any foods, which have been highly sugared, salted and processed, are devoid of so many of the nutrients and life-giving substances needed for optimal health. Foods as close to their natural state, or as nature intended them to be consumed, are, in contrast, rich in health-giving nutrients that sustain and energise us. Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables are also full the “life-force” of nature, which along with vital vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients lead to a positive, natural state of physical and mental health and vibrancy.

Not so natural foods: what to avoid

These highly processed foods lead to ill-health and disease, and to the accumulation of body fat and weight gain. Under this banner come:
  • White flour-based products which have a high glycaemic index and load (High GI or High GL)
  • Refined grains, many commercial “boxed” cereals
  • Refined sugars and syrups
  • Sugary foods and drinks such as biscuits, pastries, cake, canned drinks and many sports drinks and sports products.
  • Also problematic are foods that are high in both refined sugar AND commercial fats and trans fats. These include manufactured biscuits, many cereal and breakfast bars, processed protein and energy bars, cakes, pastries, chocolate bars, sweets and candies etc.
Doesn’t it make sense to move toward nature and simply eat natural foods?

Five major food groups

The five food groups are:
vegetables and legumes/beans
fruit
lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, legumes/beans
grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties
milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.
Foods are grouped together because they provide similar amounts of key nutrients. For example, key nutrients of the milk, yoghurt, cheese and alternatives group include calcium and protein, while the fruit group is a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin C.

These food groups make up the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. 

Choose a variety of foods

Eating a varied, well-balanced diet means eating a variety of foods from each food groups daily, in the recommended amounts. It is also important to choose a variety of foods from within each food group because different foods provide different types and amounts of key nutrients.

Choosing a variety of foods will help to make your meals interesting, so that you don’t get bored with your diet. 

Occasional foods

Some foods do not fit into the five food groups because they are not necessary for a healthy diet. These foods are called ‘discretionary choices’ and they should only be eaten occasionally. They tend to be too high in either energy (kilojoules), saturated fat, added sugars, added salt or alcohol, and have low levels of important nutrients like fibre.

Examples of ‘discretionary choices’ or occasional foods are:
sweet biscuits, cakes, desserts and pastries
processed meats and fattier/salty sausages, savoury pastries and pies, commercial burgers with a high fat and/or salt content
sweetened condensed milk
ice cream and other ice confections
confectionary and chocolate
commercially fried foods
potato chips, crisps and other fatty and/or salty snack foods including some savoury biscuits
cream, butter and spreads which are high in saturated fats
sugar-sweetened soft drinks and cordials, sports and energy drinks and alcoholic drinks.

Small allowance for healthy fats

Unsaturated fats are an important part of a healthy diet. The two main types of unsaturated fats are monounsaturated fats (found in olive and canola oil, avocados, cashews and almonds) and polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 fats (found in oily fish) and omega-6 fats (found in safflower and soybean oil and Brazil nuts). These fats can help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels when they replace saturated fats in the diet. 

The Australian Dietary Guidelines include a small allowance for healthy fats each day (around 1–2 tablespoons for adults and less for children). The best way to include healthy fats in your diet is to replace saturated fat that you may currently be eating (such as butter and cream) with a healthier, unsaturated fat option (such as polyunsaturated margarine or olive oil).

Enough calories to be satisfying, but not so many that the snack becomes a meal.
Less fat and saturated fat than other similar snacks.
Whole grain and fiber, protein, and/or other nutrients that give them staying power.

Here are my picks for healthier supermarket snacks, whether you feel like having something sweet, something cool and creamy, something crunchy, or something hot and filling.

Healthy Snacks: Something Sweet

My five sweet snack choices include a higher-fiber pastry, creamy pudding, and three higher-fiber cookies.

Fat-Free Sugar-Free Instant Pudding (made with nonfat or 1% milk), various brands, 1.4-ounce box makes 2 cups. Per 1/2-cup serving made with nonfat milk: 80 calories, 0 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 6 g protein, less than 1 g fiber, 7 g sugar (from the natural sugar in milk).

Fiber One Bars (variousflavors, such as Blueberry), 6 pastries per box. Each pastry has 190 calories, 4 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, 4 g protein, 5 g fiber, 15 g sugar

Nabisco 100% Whole Grain Fig Newtons, 1 pound bag. Fig Newtons have gone whole grain! Two cookies have 110 calories, 2 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 1 g protein, 2 g fiber, 12 g sugar (some of which comes from the figs). 

South Beach Living Fiber Fit Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies, 6 individual packs per 5.1 ounce box. Among the ingredients in South Beach cookie packs are whole-grain wheat flour, high-oleic canola oil, and oat fiber. The sweeteners include sugar, maltitol (a sugar alcohol), sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame potassium.
