Health Benefits of Vitamin B1 or Thiamine

Vitamin B1 is a vital human nutrient that belongs to the Vitamin B complex. It plays an important role in maintaining a healthy nervous system and improving the cardiovascular functioning of the body.
Vitamin B1 is one of the eight water-soluble vitamins in the B complex family. It helps in the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose, which in turn is used to produce energy for carrying out various bodily functions. Vitamin B1 is also required for the breakdown of fats and protein.
In addition to these health benefits, it maintain the muscle tone along the walls of the digestive tract and promotes the health of the nervous system, skin, hair, eyes, mouth, and liver. It also improves the body’s ability to withstand stress and is often called the “anti-stress” vitamin.

Important Sources of Vitamin B1

Yeast and liver are the richest sources of Vitamin B1. Pork, whole-grain cereals, rye, wheat germ and kidney beans are also important sources of this vitamin. The list also includes asparagus, potatoes, mushrooms, romaine lettuce, spinach, tuna, green peas, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts and eggplant. Adding these to your diet will ensure a healthy level of B1 vitamin. Unfortunately, overcooking and long term refrigeration can destroy Vitamin B1.

Cereal========================================================================================Vitamin B1 Deficiency Symptoms

Some of the early symptoms of deficiency might include lethargy, irritability, loss of memory, loss of sleep or appetite, weight loss, indigestion or constipation, and calf muscle tenderness. If left untreated these initial symptoms might lead to a more severe form of thiamin deficiency, known as beriberi. This condition is characterized by nerve, heart, and brain abnormalities, but the symptoms might vary in every person and depends on a number of factors. Some more examples are explained below.
Dry Beriberi: This condition might involve nerve and muscle abnormalities, a prickling sensation in the toes, a burning sensation in the feet at night, leg cramps and muscle atrophy.
Wet Beriberi: Common symptoms might include abnormally fast heart beat, fluid retention in the legs, pulmonary edema, and hypotension, which might result in shock and even death.
Brain Abnormalities: In alcoholics, thiamin deficiency might result in brain abnormalities such as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Some of its common symptoms include haziness, involuntary eye movements, difficulty in walking and partial paralysis of the eyes among other debilitating symptoms. If ignored, these symptoms could become fatal. Some of the common symptoms of Korsakoff’s psychosis include loss of memory, incoherence and confabulation.
Infantile Beriberi: This variety is commonly seen in newborn children of women already suffering from thiamin deficiency who contract this condition from the mother’s milk. Heart failure, loss of reflexes and aphonia are some of the common symptoms, so be sure to have sufficient levels of vitamin B1 if you are pregnant.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 helps in many important bodily functions and its benefits include the following.
Involved in Energy Production: Sugar is the principal source of energy in our body where it is oxidized to form a usable form of energy due to the presence of vitamin B1. It is part of a complex enzyme system called the pyruvate dehydrogenase system, which helps in the oxidation of sugar. Vitamin B1 is required for the functioning of this enzyme system, which releases energy for a variety of normal functions in the body.
Development of Myelin Sheaths: Vitamin B1 helps in the proper development of myelin sheaths around nerves. A deficiency of Vitamin B1 might result in the degeneration of these coverings, which can result in nerve death and damage.
Proper Cardiac Function: This vitamin helps in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is used to relay messages between the nerves and muscles and to ensure proper cardiac function. Vitamin B1 deficiency can therefore result in irregular cardiac functions. People suffering from congestive heart failure, when given vitamin B1 intravenously for seven days, showed considerable improvements in their echocardiograms, which proves that vitamin B1 can prevent heart disease.
Prevents Cataracts: When used along with other essential nutrients, Vitamin B1 can delay or prevent the occurrence of cataracts.
Anti-Aging Properties: Vitamin B1 works as a powerful antioxidant, which helps you protect your body from the signs of aging like wrinkles, age spots, and other age-related conditions that regularly affect the organ systems.
Ensures Proper Digestion: This vitamin also helps in the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which is essential for the complete digestion of food particles.
Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease: Vitamin B1 is thought to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. People suffering from this disease have benefited when treated with vitamin B1 supplements of 100 mg per day. There are placebo-controlled trial studies that are ongoing to determine more about the mechanism by which this occurs.
Improves Memory: Vitamin B1 can improve your memory and powers of concentration. It is also used in the management of many nervous disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Bell’s palsy.
Vitamin B1 is better known as a “morale vitamin” for its positive impact on the nervous system and a healthy mental attitude.
Red Blood Cell Production: Vitamin B1 plays an important role in the production of red blood cells, which in turn keeps people healthy, active, and energized.
Alcoholism: Vitamin B1 can fend off the deficiencies caused by cirrhosis, infections, hyperthyroidism, and the other effects of alcoholism.
Improves Appetite: This vitamin can also significantly improve appetite and mental alertness.
Note: Vitamin B1 is a water soluble vitamin, and will be expelled through urine. Therefore, make sure to maintain a well balanced diet that can resupply the necessary amounts of vitamin B1 regularly.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin

Vitamin B2 is a water soluble vitamin. The human body needs a daily dosage of it since it cannot be stored in the body. It plays a major role in energy production and represents an essential nutrient in your diet.
Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, plays a significant role in the production of energy. It helps in the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar, which fuels the body’s many functions. Riboflavin also plays an active part in the electron transport chain that produces cellular energy. Furthermore, it helps in the processing of amino acids and fats. It can also serve as an antioxidant, which slows the pace of aging.

Important Sources of Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2 can be found in various food sources, though usually in negligible quantities. The most important sources of Riboflavin are diary products, brewer’s yeast, dry-roasted soybeans, edamame, and liver. Some of its other sources include oysters, lean meats, mushrooms, broccoli, avocados and salmon.
Oily fish, including mackerel, eel and herring are also rich sources of riboflavin. The list also includes eggs, shellfish, wild rice, dried peas, millet, sunflower seeds and beans to add B2 in your diet. Dark leafy green vegetables, such as asparagus and spinach, whole grain products, and mushrooms are also rich in riboflavin. Cabbage, carrots, apples, figs and berries have a comparatively low level of Vitamin B2. Fortunately, vitamin B2 is not lost during cooking, unlike many other vitamins. However, it is destroyed by strong light and baking soda.

Edamame============================================Deficiency Symptoms of Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2 deficiency can hamper the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, as these elements would require Vitamin B2 for its complete metabolism. Some of the deficiency symptoms of vitamin B2 include bloodshot eyes, high sensitivity to light, a burning sensation of the eyes, parched lips, inflammation in the mouth, and a sore tongue. Some of the other common symptoms include dull or oily hair, premature wrinkles, and split nails. Riboflavin deficiency could result in the improper functioning of adrenal glands, which in turn would result in various conditions such as anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome and cataract development. Riboflavin deficiency is thought to be a major cause for the fatal condition of preeclampsia in pregnant women.
Riboflavin deficiency mainly manifests as skin lesions, especially over the tongue and around the corners of the mouth. If left untreated, it can lead to a swollen tongue, seborrheic dermatitis, and even impaired nerve function. Dandruff, low blood count, chipping of the lips and corners of the mouth, dizziness, hair loss, loss of sleep, poor digestion and slowed mental responses are some of the other symptoms of Vitamin B2 deficiency

Health Benefits of Riboflavin

Riboflavin is a well absorbed water soluble vitamin, which has a key role to play in maintaining overall human health. Some of its major health benefits are given below:
Helps in Energy Production: Riboflavin plays a major role in the production of energy by assisting in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B3 or Niacin

The health benefits of niacin include maintaining good blood circulation, healthy robust skin condition, and normal functioning of the brain, boosting memory power, aiding the digestive tract to absorb sufficient carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, reducing the effects of arthritis and improving the symptoms of schizophrenia. The most important benefit of niacin or vitamin B3 is its ability to lower cholesterol levels and control them.
Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, releases energy into the body’s cells, but niacin is primarily used to lower high cholesterol levels. You may get Vitamin B3 in supplement stores, but it is always sensible to buy niacin when specifically instructed by a doctor.
Foods such as fish, nuts, dried grains, liver, chicken, lean red meat, whole grains, enriched refined grains and dried beans are good sources of vitamin B3.
Vitamin B3 and its various forms, such as niacin, are popularly used as therapeutic vitamins to relieve many ailments. Niacin is also used to treat respiratory or vascular disorders, and as an effective dietary supplement for treating pellagra, along with Lovastatin.
However, those benefits are just the tip of the iceberg. Vitamin B3 has numerous other health benefits, which mankind has slowly discovered over the course of many years. Niacin mainly comes in 3 types or forms, which Chicken2include nicotinic acid, Niacinamide, and Inositol Hexaniacinate as supplement tablets or doses. Nicotinic acid helps to reduce high blood cholesterol levels, whereas Niacinamide may be found in nutritional supplements.

Health Benefits of Vitamin B3 or Niacin

Some of the beneficial properties are explained in greater detail below.
Digestion: As a member of B-complex vitamins, niacin aids in the normal functioning of the human digestive system, promoting a healthy appetite, properly functioning nerves, and a glowing skin.
Pellagra: People with weak muscles, digestive problems, skin irritation or pellagra may have a severe vitamin B3 deficiency. These people need to administer an increased dosage of vitamin B3 supplements into their diet.
Cholesterol: Intake of large quantities of niacin, which would be 1100 or more milligrams in a day, has been proven to considerably reduce the levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and raise the good HDL cholesterol, which prevents the thickening of artery walls and conditions like atherosclerosis.
Water-soluble: Niacin is a water-soluble vitamin that can travel through the human blood stream and the body has the option to discharge excess vitamins through the process of urination. Therefore, such vitamins may be administered to human beings through both food and liquid, since our body does need a constant supply.
Food Sources: Vitamin B3 may be found in meat, turkey, tuna fish, eggs, poultry products, curds, brewer’s yeasts, peanuts, legumes, potatoes, cheese, brown rice, oats, barley, wheat flakes and milk. Foods like bread and cereals are also rich in niacin. Even tryptophan-rich foods like yogurt and eggs can boost niacin levels.
Daily Dosages: Ideally, women should have at least 15-18mg per day. It is extremely beneficial for women who are on various types of medication. Even those who occasionally use sleeping pills may develop a vitamin B3 deficiency. Men should consume 15-19 mg every day, whereas children should have a 9-13mg dosage of vitamin B3 each day.
Sex: Niacin helps in creating sex hormones for people suffering through sexual disorders like impotence and erectile dysfunction.
Energy: Vitamin B3 performs the important function of converting proteins, carbohydrates and fats into energy.
Mental Health: Even mental derangement and associated conditions may be cured with the administration of niacin supplements or medicinal drugs.
Diabetes: Niacin is known to treat diabetes and high blood sugar levels. Most diabetic patients are able to effectively control HBA1C levels with the help of niacin.

Although it is rare to have a niacin deficiency that requires supplementation, modern society may actually benefit from supplementary forms of niacin to treat various body ailments. All three forms of niacin have different effects on human body. Niacinamide has prominent anti-inflammatory contents, whereas Nicotinic acid & Inositol hexaniacinate may affect the circulation of the blood.
You may use niacin or vitamin B3 supplements with regular meals or even in liquids. Niacin may have a drugging effect when taken in very high dosages, and as always, it is best to consult a doctor or medical professional before taking any supplements or changing your diets in any considerable way.
