Apricots are a very good source of vitamins A and C. They are also rich in dietary fibre and potassium. They contain phytochemicals called carotenoids which are responsible for imparting red, orange and yellow colours to fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant lycopene is one of the carotenoids contained in apricots. To sum up, apricots have a vast nutritional profile comprising of carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids and the like. Its nutritional profile is explained below.
Calories: Fresh apricots are low in calories, providing just 50 calories per 100 grams of weight which makes them ideal for weight loss.
Dietary Fibre: Driedapricots are rich in dietary fibre, particularly soluble fibre. This fibre dissolves into a gel like substance and binds to fatty acids to encourage their excretion in waste. Thus, it plays an important role in reducing LDL and total cholesterol levels. A half cup of dried fibre provides 19% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of dietary fibre.
Potassium: Both fresh and dried apricots are rich in potassium but dried apricots have a higher content of this mineral. Potassium, along with sodium, regulates the balance of intracellular and extracellular water levels, thus maintaining healthy blood pressure. Half a cup of dried apricots provides around 21% of RDA of potassium.
Iron: Fresh apricots contain small amounts of iron. Dried apricots have a comparatively higher content of this mineral. Like most plant based foods, the iron provided by apricots is non-heme iron which cannot be absorbed easily like heme iron provided by animal flesh. The best way is to consume it with sources of heme iron or vitamin C to increase its absorption capacity. Half a cup of dried apricots provides nearly 10% of RDA of iron.
Antioxidants: Dried apricots are high in antioxidants and other potent antioxidant phytonutrients. They have a high content of beta-carotene which makes them a rich source of vitamin A. Half a cup serving of dried apricots provides about 13.5% of RDA of vitamin A. The total antioxidant or ORAC value of raw apricots is 1115 umol TE per 100 grams. Much of this is provided by flavonoid poly phenolic antioxidants such as lutein, zea xanthin and beta- crytoxanthin. These compounds provide protection against oxygen derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause ageing, cancers and other diseases. Zea xanthin is a carotenoid that is absorbed into the retinal “macula lutea” in the eyes, providing antioxidant and protective light filtering functions.

The Health Benefits of Apricots

10 Health Benefits of Apricots.
Apricots are a summery golden colored fruit with amazing aroma and sweet taste. They origin from Asia and were appropriately named as the “golden eggs of the sun” because of their natural yellowish color. Ripened apricots often have a flavor somewhat similar to plums. Very often, it is more recommended to eat dried apricots rather than fresh ones if you want to benefit from all their amazing health advantages. Dried apricots contain more concentrated amounts of these nutrients. The apricot seed is edible and its taste is similar to almonds. Apricot seed oil is also produced from the seed and is very healthy and packed with nutrients.
As almost every other fresh fruit, apricots are low in calories, but high in nutritive components. 100 grams of fresh apricot contains as low as 50 calories. Regardless, they’re rich in antioxidants, dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins. They also contain essential phyto-chemicals needed to prevent heart diseases, lower the bad cholesterol and protect the human body from cancer.
Apricots contain carotenes and lots of vitamin A. 100 grams of fresh apricot can contain as much as 64% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin A – a vitamin important for the health of the skin and mucus membranes. Carotenes help the body protect from oral cavity and lung cancers. Vitamin C is another important vitamin helping with destroying free radicals and infections. There are plenty of minerals such as manganese, zinc, calcium, iron, potassium etc. Potassium helps the heart by regulating the blood pressure and the heart rate. The ORAC value for 100 grams of apricots is 1115 umol TE. This comes from the range of powerful antioxidants such as beta cryptoxantin, lutein, zea xantin etc. that fight the free radicals in the body. Zea xantin is a carotenoid absorbed in the eyes where it helps with light-filtering functions which is why it helps protect from AMRD (age-related macular disease), especially in elderly people.
Apricots are best eaten fresh with a golden orange color or dried because of the nutrients concentration. Ones with pale yellow color should be avoided as they were picked too early and are not ripe yet. Apricots are best stored in the fridge, but they don’t last long and they should be eaten as soon as possible. Fresh, ripe apricots are very soft and delicate and should be handled with care.
The nutritive value for 100 grams of apricots is as follows:
  • 50 kcal
  • Dietary fiber: 2 grams
  • Protein: 1.4 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 11 grams
  • Total fat: 0.4 grams
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
Serving suggestions:
  • Fresh or dried

Superhuman Shake for Strength and Muscle

Did you know that more than 45 million Americans belong to a gym or health club? That must mean there are a whole lot of people who want to feel and look better. Most of these 45 million Americans, hitting the gym, want to lose weight and get stronger. But how many of them are getting the results as quickly as they want?  Not many…

Fresh Made Banana Milkshake

Are you ready to feel fitter than you have in your entire life?  You don’t have to take steroids or spend endless hours at the gym. With the right lifestyle, including, of course, diet, you’ll feel and look better than you have in years – and you’ll be the strongest and fittest of your life.
There are a few ways to gain this amazing vitality and strength. I’m going to share them with you now. Remember, your life is up to you. Taking the right steps now will insure you with a healthy, energetic body lasting through life.
Increase Strength All Naturally
In his NY Times Best Selling book 4-Hour-Body Tim Ferris uses himself as a test subject to prove how you can naturally boost strength and stamina.  With a similar Super Shake that is given in this article he takes the shake 2x daily for about 4 months and his Total testosterone goes from 244.8 to 653.3!  This secret shake more than doubled his testosterone and he noticed huge changes in his body for losing body fat and increasing strength and energy.
I’ve talked numerous times about the importance of eating whole, fresh, organic, ‘real’ foods instead of fake foods. Fake foods are highly processed foods loaded with preservatives, colorings, flavorings and other harmful substances.
Again, I’m going to tell you here that one of the best ways to increase strength and boost vitality is by what you put into your body.
Increase Growth Hormone (GH) Production
The body makes growth hormone via the pituitary gland. This naturally occurring hormone decreases in production after the age of forty, especially in men. Low GH levels are to blame for many signs of aging. Human Growth Hormone is known as your anti-aging hormone where if Cortisol levels are high it is known as the aging hormone.  So if you want age slower and feel younger you must keep GH high.
Signs of Sluggish GH Production
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Increase in fat
  • Loss of energy
  • Decreased Mental Clarity
There are effective, all natural ways to increase your body’s production of GH. One of the best ways is with what you eat. Focus on getting certain types of nutrients into your body everyday. You’ll feel stronger and younger in no time.
Nutrients Needed for Increased GH Production
  • Protein
  • Glutamine
  • L-Arginine
  • Choline
  • Niacin
Now, of course you’ll want to eat foods rich in these to build your strengthen and increase your vitality. I’ve formulated a special ‘Superhuman’ shake that provides you with a potent shot of all these vital nutrients to stimulate GH production.
This is the recipe for my highly nutritious new shake:
  • 3 Raw Eggs
  • 1 Scoop Organic Protein Powder (preferably whey)
  • 4-8 oz. Kefir or yogurt
  • 1 Banana
  • 3 Tablespoons (TBSP) Almond Butter
  • 1 TBSP Flax Meal or Chia Seeds
  • 1 TSP Cinnamon
Along with this Supershake supplementing with Cod Liver Oil 1 TBSP daily and 5,000IU of Vitamin D3 will also help boost HG.
These ingredients have been specially chosen for their specific nutritional benefits. Here’s a glimpse at these nutrients:
Eggs are packed with the most bio-available source of protein albumin, amino acids, and beta-carotene
Organic Protein Powder gives you the extra protein you need to pack on muscle
Raw Dairy contains a highly absorbable whey protein, calcium and CLA a potent fat burning compound
Almond butter is a rich source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, protein, and vitamin E and L-Arginine.
Flax seeds offer the body a robust dose of omega-3, a seriously needed nutrient in the Western world, which fights inflammation amongst its other health benefits.
Banana – gives you the carbohydrates you need to build muscles
Cinnamon is an ancient spice containing choline and niacin (both helpful in GH production.) But that’s not all cinnamon brings to the table. It also contains the following:
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Sodium
  • Betaine
  • Vitamin K

Mix these highly nutritious ingredients together thoroughly and drink up! This shake is loaded with all the essential nutrients you need to increase your GH production.
Eating three, nutritious meals daily plus drinking my Superhuman Shake two times a day will get you on the path to increasing strength and overall body vibrancy.
Get plenty sleep as this is when your body releases GH. In addition to sleep vigorous exercise also stimulates GH production. It’s also wise to eat a low sugar diet as insulin hinders GH.
It’s important to remember that synthetic GH should be avoided. The side effects both long and short term have not been definitively identified yet and it’s theorized that some may be very dangerous to your health.
Weight Training to Increase Strength
Of course, when it comes to building strength, both men and women alike should engage in a strength training program lifting weights. This will help to build muscle as you age, keeping you fit and strong. Weight lifting also strengthens bones – an essential as you age.

Rosemary Oil Uses and Benefits

Considered sacred by ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Hebrewsrosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is much more than an aromatic herb that tastes good on potatoes and roasted lamb.  It’s also one of the most powerful herbs and essential oils on the planet.
rosemary

Rosemary has a woody, evergreen like scent and is part of the mint family. In recent research, it’s been shown to boost nerve growth factor and support the healing of neurological tissue and brain function.
Native to the Mediterranean, the wooded evergreen has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years to:
  • Improve memory
  • Soothe digestive uses
  • Relieve muscle aches and pains
More recently, it has become a popular ingredient in many skin and hair care products due to its antiseptic properties and researchers are starting to dig deeper into its medicinal characteristics.

Rosemary Nutrition Profile

Having an antioxidant ORAC value of 3,300, rosemary has the same free radical fighting power as goji berries! The chemical in rosemary primarily responsible for this is carnosol, a phenolic diterpene also found in mountain desert sage.
In addition to being a rich antioxidant, carnosol is also known for its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, which help explain why rosemary essential oil is so potent. According to a recent article published in the journal Cancer Letters, “Carnosol has been evaluated for anti-cancer property in prostate, breast, skin, leukemia, and colon cancer with promising results!”
It has also been discovered that carnosol targets cells to reduce inflammation and can also:
  • Balance androgen and estrogen in the body
  • Lower DHT (dihyroxytestosterone) improving hair growth and prostate health
  • Reduce cancer risk
  • Increase nerve growth factor healing nerve tissue
According to researchers, “It has a selective toxicity towards cancer cells versus non-tumorigenic cells and is well tolerated when administered to animals.” In other words, carnosol acts like a military sniper who only takes out his enemy target and doesn’t damage neighboring cells like the chemotherapy nuclear-bomb approach, which kills everything along its path

Top 4 Rosemary Essential Oil Benefits

In addition to reversing inflammation and halting the growth of cancer cells, research has uncovered that rosemary essential oil is also highly effective in several other areas.

1. Rosemary Oil Benefits Hair Growth

When applied over the scalp rosemary essential oil helps stimulate hair growth. Many people also claim that it can prevent baldness, slows graying, and can be used to treat dandruff and dry scalp. After testing a hair lotion that he patented, Francesc Casadó Galcerá found that a mixture of hops, rosemary, and swertia and found some pretty remarkable results:
  • A 22.4% increases in new hair growth.
  • An increase in “rapid” hair growth.
  • An increase in microcirculation of the scalp, which promotes healing.
  • An improvement in the ability of hair to resist traction.
  • A decrease in hair loss after shampooing.
To experience how rosemary oil benefits hair growth try using this homemade DIY Rosemary Mint Shampoo recipe.

2. Rosemary Improves Memory

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance, pray you love, remember.”
~ Ophelia (Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”)
Worn by Greek scholars to enhance their memory when taking exams, the mental strengthening ability of rosemary has been known for thousands of years. TheInternational Journal of Neuroscience published a study highlighting this phenomenon.
Upon evaluating how the cognitive performance of 144 participants was affected by rosemary oil aromatherapy, lavender oil aromatherapy, and controls University of Northumbria, Newcastle researchers discovered that,
  • Probably due to its significant calming effect, “lavender produced a significant decrement in performance of working memory, and impaired reaction times for both memory and attention based tasks.”
  • “Rosemary produced a significant enhancement of performance for overall quality of memory and secondary memory factors.”
  • Rosemary helped people become more alert.
  • Lavender and rosemary helped produced a feeling of “contentment” in the volunteers.
Affecting much more than memory, studies have also known that rosemary essential oil can help treat and prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Published in Psychogeriatrics, the effects of aromatherapy were tested on 28 elderly people with dementia (17 of whom had Alzheimer’s).
After inhaling the vapor of rosemary and lemon in the morning, and lavender and orange in the evening various functional assessments were conducted and all patients “patients showed significant improvement in personal orientation” and no one experienced any side effects.

3. Liver Detoxification and Gallbladder Function

Traditionally used for its ability to help with gastrointestinal complaints, rosemary is also a fantastic detoxifier. Studies have been done in India uncovering how supplementing with rosemary greatly enhances your body’s bile flow (which is essential for fat metabolism and detoxification) and reduces plasma liver enzymes (which has been linked to type II diabetes).
Essentially, by helping enhance the performance of the bile-producing gallbladder (as well as balancing out the microflora in your gut) proper peristaltic activity is promoted, which boosting nutrient absorption and helps reverse/prevent toxic overload.

4. Rosemary Lowers Cortisol

A study was conducted out of Meikai University, School of Dentistry in Japan that interestingly evaluated how 5 minutes of lavender and rosemary aromatherapy affected the salivary cortisol levels (the “stress” hormone) of 22 healthy volunteers.
Upon observing that both essential oils enhance free radical scavenging activity, they also discovered that both greatly reduced cortisol levels, which protects the body from chronic disease due to oxidative stress.

Where to Buy Rosemary Oil

This is one of the most vital things you must know about essential oils… Not all essential oils are created equally. In fact, most of them are worthless to your health and often synthetic. When buying essential oils make sure they are therapeutic grade. If you want to order the brand I trust and personally use, email oils@draxe.com to order or learn where to buy them.
