  • Weakness: Severe pain from muscle or bone movement can cause reluctance to move the shoulder and weakness of the shoulder.
  • Numbness: If the arthritis or degenerative disease of the disc compresses the nerve you may have pain or numb feeling, burning sensation, a loss of sensation, or an altered sensation. 
  • Swelling: Injury to the neck or shoulder may cause pain, deformity and swelling of the shoulder and arm.


Tests and Diagnosis


Diagnosing the exact cause of your neck and shoulder pain can be difficult at times owing to a wide range of possible causes. Your doctor will take a complete medical history and do a thorough physical exam to diagnose the underlying condition. Medical history may include questions regarding location of the pain, time and pattern of the pain, history of injury and any other associated symptoms such as numbness, feeling cold in the hand.

Diagnostic tests that may be performed to diagnose the underlying cause of pain include:
  • CT Scan: CT scan can show the above mentioned findings such as narrowing of the space between two spinal bones, arthritis-like diseases, tumors, slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal canal, fractures and instability of the spinal column that are not obvious on an X-ray. This is often done as an alternative to MRI.
  • MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging shows the details of neural (nerve-related) elements that are not visualized on CT scan.
  • Myelography: Done as an alternative to MRI
  • ECG: An electrocardiogram may be needed if you complaint of chest pain, shortness of breath, and have risk factors for a heart attack (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or tobacco use).

Treatment


Your doctor will prepare a treatment plan after a complete history and physical examination (and any tests, if indicated). Treatment of all the underlying causes cannot be detailed here as the treatment for a simple strain is far different from treatment of heart attack. The appropriate treatment to relieve pain that may be helpful in all the conditions is given below.  If you have a minor injury, sprain or strain, then a combination of the following treatments may be helpful.

  • Rest: This is most important after injury, sprain or strain. Do not overexert and take rest as this allows the acute inflammation and pain to subside.

How to Get Rid of Ear Pain

Ear ache or otalgia is a common phenomenon for most adults and children; the pain can be very disturbing and can often make you fussy and irritable. There can be many reasons for this, such as, an outer or inner ear infection, an infection of the skull's mastoid bone which is located behind the outer ear called mastoiditis, and also from infections and disorders of the nerves surrounding the ear, which may have originated from dental conditions, jaw disorder or throat disorders.




Here are some ways through which you can ease your ear pain

  • Trick of Swallowing: Try to swallow some water or food, as it can relieve your ear ache by removing the pressure that is normally built up behind the ear drum. You might fall victim to such a pressure by a bacterial ear infection or a change in weather. On chew gum or pretending to chew on something can give you the same effect.
  • Garlic Oil Remedy: You can place 2 to 3 drops of garlic oil to the affected ear thrice daily, and then leave the drops in your ear for about 30 minutes. Then flush your ear out completely with warm water. Allicin which is the potent active ingredient of garlic acts as a natural antibiotic and can destroy any bacteria infecting your ear and causing ear aches.
  • Hot Pack Remedy: You can also relieve your ear ache by applying a hot pack to it. This heat which is generated from the hot pack will dilate the blood vessels in your ear, thus reducing the pain. You must be careful to cover the hot pack with a clean cloth before applying it to your ear. Then lie down on your side and apply the pack on your affected ear for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then repeat this process after a three hour wait, do this three times daily.
  • Over the Counter Remedies: You can also use an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These medications will help to give you relief from the pain and reduce the fever which is associated with an ear infection. Be sure to read the precautions mentioned on the package so as to determine the dosage.
  • See a Doctor: Finally it is advisable that you consult an ENT (ear, nose, and tongue) specialist if in case your ear ache persists or worsens. You must not avoid an ear check up if your ear ache is accompanied by a high fever and is intense. Many times it has been seen that intense pain with fever can be an infection of the middle ear, which requires antibiotic therapy, and if it is left untreated, pus may form in the ear and cause deafness.

While it is okay to follow the above mentioned home remedies and over the counter medicines during any mild ear pain experience, you must also be careful not to let it pass if the pain gets unbearable.

to its healthy oil, but in its fresh state it is also highly
beneficial in preventing many chronic diseases.

Description
Olives are the fruits of the olive tree (Olea Europea), which originated from the Mediterranean area, although nowadays it is also cultivated in other parts of the world.
They are an excellent source of healthy oil, and the Latin word for oil is oleas. Although olives are not commonly juiced, I’m including it under the “Healing Food” section due to its many healing virtues by mainly its oil.
The olive fruit is botanically a drupe, green in color when young, and blackish-purple when fully ripe. It is composed of three parts: a thin, smooth peel or epidermis, a pulpy flesh of varied texture (from soft to firm), and a woody stone. The fruit pulp is rich in lipids, which concentration tends to increase as the fruit ripens.
Many varieties of olives are used to produce olive oil, but here we will focus on the varieties that can be eaten raw (or less frequently cooked), either green or ripe.
In general terms, edible olives can be classified in two main types: 1) green olives, which are harvested before they are fully ripe, have a firm flesh and are green in color; 2) black olives, which are harvested when they are fully ripe, have a softer flesh than green olives, and are black or purple in color.

Nutritional Benefits
Olives are rich in fat, especially oleic acid, an omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acid. They are also excellent sources of minerals (potassium, calcium, phosphorous, zinc, iron), vitamins (beta-carotene, vitamin E, D and K), anti-oxidant phytonutrient (polyphenols) flavonoids, and fiber. Olives in brine have a high content in sodium, as well.

Olive paté (a paste made from green or black olives) is delicious on crusty bread, crackers, raw veggies and fish.

Caution
Raw olives are very bitter so are sometimes soaked in a concentrated brine solution, making it a very salty food. People with high blood pressure may want to avoid taking olives preserved this way.
